Major Sports in the UK

Football (soccer) is the UK's most popular sport. The English Premier League is one of the most-watched leagues globally. The FA Cup is the oldest football competition in the world. England won the FIFA World Cup in 1966.

Cricket originated in England. The most famous competition between England and Australia is The Ashes. Formats include Test matches (up to five days), one-day internationals, and Twenty20.

Rugby also originated in England, reportedly invented at Rugby School in 1823. Two forms exist: Rugby Union and Rugby League. The Six Nations Championship is an annual Rugby Union competition involving England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, and Italy.

Tennis is widely played. The Wimbledon Championships in south-west London is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and one of the four Grand Slam tournaments. Wimbledon is known for strawberries and cream and grass courts.

Other Sports and Major Events

Horse racing is one of the UK's oldest sports. Major events include Royal Ascot, the Grand National (held at Aintree near Liverpool), and the Derby (held at Epsom).

Golf originated in Scotland in the 15th century. The Open Championship (first held in 1860) is the oldest major golf tournament. St Andrews in Scotland is known as the "Home of Golf."

Rowing has a strong tradition. The annual Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge on the River Thames dates back to 1829.

British drivers have been successful in Formula 1, with the British Grand Prix held at Silverstone.

The 2012 Olympic Games were held in London, making it the first city to host the modern Olympics three times (1908, 1948, 2012). The Paralympic Games were also held in London in 2012, with British athletes performing exceptionally well.
