Population and Demographics

The UK has a population of approximately 67 million people, one of the most densely populated countries in Europe. England has around 56 million (roughly 84% of the total), Scotland about 5.5 million, Wales about 3.1 million, and Northern Ireland around 1.9 million.

Population growth is driven by natural increase and net migration. Immigration has been a significant factor, particularly since the late 20th century, with people arriving from Commonwealth countries, the European Union, and elsewhere.

The UK has an aging population — the proportion of older people is increasing as average life expectancy now exceeds 80 years. This raises demand for healthcare, pensions, and social care.

The UK is a diverse, multicultural society. London is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, with over 300 languages spoken.

A census takes place every 10 years to count the population. The most recent census was held in 2021.
